A Canadian family shared a video purportedly showing a fiery UFO high in the sky. The identity of the object filmed over Quebec in 2018 left many puzzled.
UFO experts analyzed it and concluded it was not a regular aircraft or drone. Although they did not know what it was, they agreed that the video was genuine and not a hoax.
However, one analyst suggested it could be a mylar balloon.
Bright burning rotating UFO over Quebec
In 2018, a Quebecois family was enjoying a day out in fine weather when they noticed a strange object in the sky. It was a cloudless day, and they had an unimpeded view of the object rising rapidly in the blue sky. They started filming it out of curiosity.
The UFO shone brightly and seemed to rotate slowly. It also burned bright red and green as it gained altitude.
History Channel’s The Proof is Out There aired the video of the mysterious object (see below). It had no visible propellers, but the burning seemed to be exhaust from its propulsion system.
A woman asked in French: “What is it?”
She continued commenting in French as the UFO soared in the air. “It’s shiny,” she said.
“It’s a flying craft,” a male voice responded.
“It flashed!” a third person exclaimed.
The family grew increasingly excited as they watched the strange display in the sky.
Video analysts and aviation experts chimed in
History Channel’s Tony Harris wondered whether it was a spacecraft burning off fuel on its way to space. He consulted experts for an explanation of the puzzling sighting.
According to Canadian investigative journalist MJ Banais, the North American country has a long tradition of unresolved UFO sightings. Canadians report an average of three sightings daily, and Quebec is among the country’s UFO hotspots.
He added that Canada is one of the few countries in the world that actively collects UFO data. Banais analyzed the video and concluded it was genuine and not a hoax.
Author and journalist Alex Brooks suggested it could be “someting not of this world.”
An aviation expert said it was a mylar balloon
Video analyst Marc D’Antonio agreed with Banais that the video was not a hoax. He also believed it was not a drone or an airplane but could not explain what it was.
History also consulted aviation expert Tim McMillan.
McMillan said it appeared to have a shiny reflective surface resembling a mirror. He believed the burning appearance was sunlight reflecting on the object’s surface.
“It’s reflecting sunlight very much like a mirror. So all of that is very characteristic of a bright, shiny mylar party balloon,” he said.
A close-up of the object suggested it was indeed a mylar balloon.
People often mistake mylar balloons for UFOs

Mylar balloons or foil balloons are plastic with a metallic coating. The metallic layer acts as a reflective surface in bright sunlight.
They stay longer in the sky and fly higher than latex balloons because they don’t leak gas as quickly.
